01/23/05: Today I put the "Hotel" page from the old website back up. I hope that this will be of use to any of you preparing to visit the SDACM in San Diego.

I have placed a link to it in the menu bar on the homepage and will get all of the menu bars updated in the next few days.

A big Thanks goes out to my loving wife Annette for compiling all of this information together.

12/13/04: Recently, I have noticed that contributors to this site as well as others have shown frustration at not being able to visit their old spaces when going to the Museum. There are several reasons for this.

First gents, there is a lot of asbestos in that boat. She was built in a time when that was an acceptable material for use in construction & insulation. Removing it is a costly and time consuming effort. I have it on very good authority that efforts are being undertaken to remedy this situation.

Second, there has to be a sprinkler system available in all spaces that are accessible to the public. Those of you that have sailed aboard Midway know & understand that this was not the case. We had our own ways of dealing with issues of that sort.

The problem boils down to the fact that Midway is no longer a warship of the United States Navy, she is now a Museum, subject to the laws of the state of California. There is an enormous cost associated with achieving both of the above mentioned goals and it will only be solved through time and effort. While I know that it is difficult to walk the decks of the boat and now feel like a restricted man, it is a necessary thing at this time to help preserve the history and legacy of all that we have done while aboard her.

And please don't badger the Docents and Tour Guides to death while aboard. Most of them are former Midway Sailors just like yourself, who Volunteer their time to do this. Most are not paid. The ship is already on the right track, having attracted more vistitors than was anticipated.

Within the next year or two, most of the ship should be open for complete viewing. Until then, enjoy what we have! We've waited a long time for it!

09/23/04: The pilots, aircrews and maintenance personnel of HC-11 in San Diego have begun transitioning from thier CH-46 Sea Knights to the newer H-60's. The word is that the SDACM will be getting one of the CH-46's for display on the flight deck of Midway. The full article can be found in the current issue of Navy Times here.
