These Day's

Navy Day's
I was a young farmboy when I joined the Navy in January 1951, never had been East of the Mississippi. After a cold, cold Basic Training at Great Lakes, we spent two (2) days on a troop train going to Norfolk and on to the USS Midway. I was aboard for three (3) Med trips, two (2) trips to Gitmo, a cruise above the Arctic Circle & two (2) trips to Halifax with Navy Cadets. Many more cruises in the Atlantic, we were busy training pilots for Korea. This involved many hours of flight operations day and night. All in all it was a very important and interesting part of my life which I will never forget.

After discharge in 1954, I applied for the position of Airport Fire Chief at the Des Moines International Airport. I was accepted which required me to join the Iowa Air National Guard. I held that position until I retired from the military in 1986. I attribute the success of my tour in the military to the training I received while in the Navy. Itry to keep tack of the Midway via the internet and other publications I receive.

SDACM After Action Report
My wife of fifty (50) years and I traveled to San Diego in January 2004 for the final ride across the Bay on the Midway. Brought back many memories and enjoyed the event. In the trip to San Diego and the "ride" I only met one (1) other person who was aboard during the early 50's. I am sure there were more old salts there but I did not meet them. Keep up the good work on the website, I really enjoy what I pull up on the computer.
